MOVING MOUNTAINS
EST 2005

A band from the state of New York.

“Pruning Of The Lower Limbs, their first album for Wax Bodega, stands as an effortlessly beautiful reawakening for vocalist/guitarist Gregory Dunn, drummer Nicholas Pizzolato, bassist Mitchell Lee and guitarist/pianist Joshua Kirby, reigniting the most inescapable parts of their musical souls in ways that are equally urgent and introspective. There’s magic in each subtle, slow-burning crescendo, the sound of a band reenergized to be back together.” - Evan Lucy

Few people had as big of an impact on making the record than Mike Watts did. Prior to doing drums, we had actually worked together on the previous version of the album that we tracked at Ivakota. He was also one of the early voices in encouraging a Moving Mountains release. He was very patient in having a lot of conversations with me, both on recording — but also navigating the music industry as someone reproaching it after 10 years away.

Some of the outboard gear in the main control room at VuDu. Notably a Pultec EQP-1A. Most of the drums were tracked using various Neve preamps.

After wrapping up the first mixes and masters, I called him to let him know we were re-doing everything. As you can imagine, not necessarily the greatest phone call to make and receive. But still, his response was supportive and encouraging. And a few months later, we were back to VuDu to re-track the drums for the record. He offered a “whatever you need, we’ll make it happen” philosophy and energy that we desperately needed at the time. It really carried the project.

We used the studio kit, which was a 3 Piece Ludwig Maple Classic. Nick has long used TRX cymbals, which were all fresh for this session. We were back and forth on two different snares to select for the record, which was between a 7” Mapex Black Panther (which has been used on every MovMou record in some capacity) and the studio’s Pearl Masters Birch 14×6. We ended up using the Birch, which had a little bit more control and clarity on some of the more nuanced sections.

Ludwig Maple Classic.

Knowing me, Mike set up two sets of stereo room mics. For the close rooms, we used a spaced pair of WA-84s, about 6 feet from the kit. And further out, we had a spaced pair of STC Coles 4038, positioned very low to the ground. We also had a WA-47 on the ground near the Coles, used as a mono room.

A STC Coles 4038 placed at the corner of the live room, just off the ground pointed to the drum kit.

For the toms, we used 421s. Snare top was a Shure 545. Overheads were a spaced pair of Soyuz 013 FET small diaphragm condensers, with some AKG C451 as spot mics on the hi hats and ride.
